Martina Navratilova, a tennis icon, is fighting cancer head-on despite the “double whammy” that has befallen her. The legendary athlete is hoping for a “favourable outcome” after having been diagnosed with throat and breast cancer. The 66-year-old American native of Czechoslovakia revealed the diagnosis on Monday but noted that both conditions were curable. The 18-time Grand Slam singles champion has previously been diagnosed with cancer; in 2010. She was found to have breast cancer, but six months later, the diagnosis was changed to “clean.”
After receiving so many well wishes and messages of love, Martina took to Twitter to make a tweet that encouraged others by saying “she isn’t done yet.”
She tweeted, “Needless to say, both Twitter and my phone are exploding. So I will say it again: thank you all for your support and I am not done yet:) Xoxoxo.”
The double whammy is significant, but it can be fixed, and she expressed hope for a successful ending. “I’ll fight with everything I’ve got, but it’s going to stink for a while.”
WTA Finals in Fort Worth
During the WTA Finals in Fort Worth, Texas, in November, Navratilova became aware of an enlarged lymph node in her neck.
Her representative said in a statement provided to AFP: “When it didn’t go down, a biopsy was done, and the results came back as stage one throat cancer.”
A lump in her breast was also found during the testing, and it was later determined to be an unrelated malignancy.
