India defeated Sri Lanka by a slim margin of two runs in the first T20I in Mumbai on Tuesday thanks in large part to Shivam Mavi’s unrelenting exhibition of fast bowling.
In the first T20I on Tuesday in Mumbai, Shivam Mavi had a breakthrough performance with his persistent fast bowling. Which helped India defeat Sri Lanka by a slim margin of two runs. Before Deepak Hooda (41) and Axar Patel (31) helped the hosts to 162 for five. Indian hitters struggled to get the Sri Lankan spinners out of the game. The Sri Lankans undoubtedly possessed the strength to chase down 163. But Mavi’s strikes at the beginning and end of the innings tipped the balance in their favour.
The spinner Axar Patel was able to contain 13 runs in the final over as the contest came down to the wire. Mavi finished with impressive stats of 4 for 22 in 4 overs.
Sri Lanka was dismissed for 160 runs in 20 overs, despite valiant efforts from Chamika Karunaratne (23 not out off 16) and captain Dasun Shanaka (45 off 27).
India has never defended a lower total in this stadium.
Hardik Pandya, the captain, chose to bowl the first over, and the pressure he generated assisted Mavi, a rookie, at the other end. Hardik bowled aggressively and gave up very little, only 12 runs in his three-over performance.
Mavi had a memorable first over when, after taking two fours from Kusal Mendis, he retaliated with amazing poise. Pathum Nissanka was unaware of Mavi’s beautiful delivery that jagged back in to smash the stumps because she had already been given a life in Hardik’s maiden over.
Mavi was smacked for a few fours in his second over as well before Dhanajaya de Silva was caught at mid-on.
Charith Asalanka mistimed a pull from Umran Malik
When Charith Asalanka mistimed a pull from Umran Malik in the eighth over. Ishan Kishan took a wonderful catch while sprinting backwards to make it 47 for three.
With Sri Lanka labouring at 68 for five in the eleventh over, pacer Harshal Patel struck lucky with his first wicket when a dangerous-looking Mendis was caught by the deep point fielder. After accepting Rajapaksa’s catch, Hardik was forced to briefly leave the field.
With a quickfire 40-run stand off 23 balls, Hasaranga and captain Shanaka kept the game interesting. By hitting Yuzvendra Chahal for back-to-back sixes over mid-wicket. Hasaranga put the Indians under more pressure, bringing the total down to a very manageable 56 runs off 36 balls.
Hasaranga was caught at mid-off by Mavi, who had been brought back to end the dangerous connection. Before succumbing to Umran in the 17th over, Shanaka was the only player who kept Sri Lanka in the match.
