IPL 2023: Tripathi’s fifty thumps Punjab and gives Sunrisers their first victory; Dhawan’s ninety-nine is in vain

Tripathi took charge

IPL 2023: Tripathi took charge and hit a half-century off of just 36 balls as Sunrisers defeated Punjab by eight wickets on Sunday.

In the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad on Sunday, Sunrisers Hyderabad defeated Punjab Kings by eight wickets to earn its first victory of the IPL 2023 season. Rahul Tripathi scored the game-winning half-century and kept the home crowd cheering.

Tripathi took charge of the 144-run chase and brilliantly smashed a half-century in just 36 balls, his first of the year and 11th overall in the IPL. The hitter scored 74 off 48 balls, remaining unbeaten, with 10 boundaries and three sixes.

Tripathi used the willow freely, playing to the ball’s merits and punishing the bowlers when they overcorrected for length. Tripathi waited and adapted to the pace and bounce of the wicket while batting with a slightly wider stance before breaking free. When playing against spinners, Tripathi again made excellent use of his feet and executed the sweep stroke flawlessly.

Once more changing up its batting order, SRH elevated Harry Brook to start the innings. A slow start was provided by Brook and Mayank Agarwal before Arshdeep Singh made the difference by striking out the Englishman with a knuckleball. By hitting three boundaries, Brook demonstrated that he liked the speed of Punjab’s bowlers.

When wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma dropped the opener, giving Agarwal a life while batting on 14, Punjab was unaffected because opener Rahul Chahar ended the scratchy stay at the wicket. The pair of Tripathi and captain Aiden Markram then formed an unbroken 100-run partnership in 52 deliveries to hand Punjab its first defeat of the year.

Earlier, Punjab overcame a batting collapse to reach 143 for the loss of nine wickets behind Shikhar Dhawan’s superb unbeaten 99 off 66 deliveries.

Sunrisers bowlers made mistakes at the end

Dhawan formed crucial partnerships with Sam Curran and Mohit Rathee as the Sunrisers bowlers made mistakes at the end and failed to dismiss Punjab. In order to assist Punjab to a respectable score, Dhawan and Mohit amassed a record 55 runs for the penultimate wicket. The Punjab captain’s innings, which resulted in his 49th IPL half-century, included 12 boundaries and five sixes.

Although Dhawan stood tall with a brilliant innings, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Marco Jansen made quick progress when the Sunrisers won the toss and elected to bowl.

As the Sunrisers continued to assault with spin, wickets started dropping. Mayank Markande picked up a four-wicket haul and recorded statistics of 4-0-15-4.

Dhawan took the Orange cap away from Ruturaj Gaikwad and became the fourth batsman in IPL history to reach 99 runs without being dismissed. The night, however, belonged to the stunning Tripathi, who assisted Sunrisers in ending their losing streak.
